tires

I had to shell out some cheddar for a new right front tire today - the perils of car ownership. Functionality is necessary and all, but damn dawg...perhaps I should liquidate my retirement account and up the ante for some spinners on the Accord..
No lying, I'm not tryin' to dog out Big Daddy Kane..
but pimpin' IS easy in this day and age, just straight up costly.

I think I'm learning

just how tough it is with 2 kids.
I love my boys more than anything, but Roni and I agree, right now this is no picnic.
Between Micah's incessant whining ("I want MILK" 40 times over between the original request and the delivery seconds later..), his refusal to learn to use the potty, and Emmet's incessant desire to always be climbing the steps. triage is not enough.

We had a fun weekend, but little down time. Looking forward to Thanksgiving, hope all loyal readers are well!

If you are not appalled

you're not paying attention..
so goes the popular bumper sticker theses days, and given my political leanings I surely concur...
but this sticker could also be speaking of the current state of lyrics in R&B songs when it comes to sex. Rock and roll has long been lame on this front - anyone for the "Lemon Song" by Zep or "Big Balls" by AC/DC or "Everybody Wants Some" by Danger Danger?

But R&B has had Prince, Barry White, Nelly, even Lisa Lisa to keep it smooth and sexy. Sure htere have been some anomalies - remember "I Wanna Sex You Up" by Colour Me Badd aka Color Me Cheezy?

But things have gotten out of hand so to speak.
First and foremost, the candy as a sex metaphor has to be kicked to the curb.
Fiddy Cent sings
"I'll take you to the candy shop, I'll let you lick the lollipop"..
is his new movie called "Get Cheesy or Die Trying'" or what?

And Trick Daddy's opus "Sugar" is pure Velveeta.

What about the Black Eyed Peas "My Humps"?

"What you gon’ do with all that junk?
All that junk inside that trunk?
I’ma get, get, get, get, you drunk,
Get you love drunk off my hump.
What u gon’ do with all that ass?
All that ass inside them jeans?
I’m a make, make, make, make you scream
Make u scream, make you scream.
Cos of my hump, my hump, my hump, my hump.
My hump, my hump, my hump, my lovely lady lumps. (Check it out)"

Off the heezy or straigt up cheezy?

Far be it from me to claim I know from sexy...but this sounds like she is describing chronic acne..

But by far the worst offender in my book is a song by Marques Houston, "Naked"..her's a snippet:

"Come on baby turn the lights off let's get naked (ooh come on)
Come on babygirl you know I just can't take it (I can't take it no more)
Let your panties hit the floor (floor)
Let your body steal the show right now (right now)
It seems like you're ready
So come on girl I just can't wait to see us naked (us naked yea)

[Verse Two]

I know you want this girl I see it in your eyes (eyes)
Don't be ashamed of what you got between those thighs oh (oh)
You know I'm gon' try not to be so excited
But I can't help it feels so good to be invited
So "baby get ready cus here I go ooh (here I go ooh)"

Okay playa..maybe I'm not in the know but in my weak opinion this s**t is CHEEZY!
But I'm not Marques..

Drama in the hood

Wow, a lot of drama has gone down in my otherwise quiet neighborhood of Wyman Park/Hampden, generally a known safe outpost in the reputed "scary" city of Baltimore..
but the past three nights have been ripe with scary drama.
On Thursday evening, apparently an "execution" style murder took place at the intersection of 37th and Tudor Arms about 4 blocks from my pad. Apparently a car drove up, paused, and out jumped a gunman and a victim - two shots later the car rolled and a dead man was left on the lawn of one of the houses on that block.

Friday night, there was serious Foxtrot action in the 'hood - a lot of light shined in my back yard, a little nerve racking given the events of the previous evening.

Tonight, I was in our front room and saw a parade of blue and red lights flying by - wnet outside to find smoke coming from in front of a neighbor's house. I went out to join the crowd gawking - a serous accident had occurred where a car apparently coming around the bend as Remington meets 33rd lost control and smashed into a SUV - both were on the sidewalk about 3 feet from the houses there..
the stroy I got was that te driver had bolted, and thats who police were after when cruising up Beech Ave, my street. Cops shut down 33rd, two ambulances came and a fire truck. Apparently the passenger in the vehicle that crased was not so lucky as the driver, and I saw them take him out unconscious on a stretcher.

This all has been a little unsettling. I like to think I'm of the urban mindset and can handle some of the roughness that comes with the territory - I have lived in areas that were less safe, albeit not straight up 'hoods, but now with 2 kids, I'm a little more paranoid. I hope this is a confluence of random events, but am nervous deep inside.

Roni and I really want to stay urban and even went to an open house on the Bolton Hill/Reservoir Hill border last Sunday - we have this fantasy of moving closer to downtown and raising our boys in a city environment. But I'm not so sure I can actually stoamach it...although the thought of suburbia makes me ill as well.

I will update if there is any update to give...

some good news

about falafel...
You all need to know that Rafa has cracked the code and makes the best falafel I've ever had.
Makes me think falafel is actually a Puerto Rican delicacy...
Rafalafel rules!

A busy week with some surprises has followed

So Roni and I went out last Saturday night to celebrate our anniversary - we kept it low key, and relatively cheap going to the Red Star Bar for a few drinks. After perusing the menu it turns out they could make something Roni could eat given her dietary restrictions. We had a really nice time, and went strolling through Fells Point post dinner. When we arrived home we chilled with my folks who had come in to babysit (thanks Mom and Dad!)! Unfortunately, Emmet came down with a serous cold and was near croupy, and up coughing most of the night. Not to be outdone, Micah woke up, and asked me to come sleep with him. Every 20 minutes or so he woke me up to ask when it was time to get up. Normally daylight savings hooks one up with extra ZZZZs but this year it justm eant the boys were up an hour earlier, grumpy and sick.
Roni and were like zombies - so bad that George Romero called to see if we'd be in his next movie!

In the afternoon we went to Micah’s classmate's house for a great Halloween party - a treasure hunt was included with a cameo by a real life blow up witch! Kids and constumes make for a lot of fun - there were some really cute get ups.

That night I was so tired I was hallucinating, I had to bed down by 8:30.

Halloween was fun - Emmet and Micah donned their duck costumes and did a little trick or quacking. Still tired, R and I went to be bed shortly after the boys did. Pictures forthcoming..

Fast forward to Wednesday eve when I guest bartended at the Spy Club..Now I've waited many tables (to paraphrase JBJ, I've seen a million customers and I've served them all!), but never formally bartended. Nevertheless I had a great time, and nobody complained too loudly about my mixed drink quality.. if they did I blamed on the rail liquor I was forced to use (Yo, if this had Tanqueray in it would be off the heezy, knowwhatI'msayin'?)

On Thursday, my friend Keeve and I headed to the Talking Head club for some punk rock action. I'm glad Keeve motivated me to go, because otherwise I would have missed a kick ass show. I missed the first band, but was in time to catch the Black Flag meets X Action of Fascist Fascist - nothing too original or mind-blowing, but this was the best performance I've seen by them. Female vocals, loud bar cordy punk rock with a lot of expletives thrown in for good measure. Next up was the Get Hustle - a band who I have heard of but previously never heard - a 3 piece with drums, organ and an insane (again) female vocalist - they blew me away!! I was tired and had contemplated leaving before they played, but I stayed - the first song hooked me in and I was there in full effect for the show.

Now a note about the crows - it was me, Keeve, and a bunch of hipsters of the ironic type. You know, young 20-somethings with moustaches and Iron Maiden t-shirts trying to one-up each other on the irony factor. But luckily I didn’t have time to change after getting home, cooking, and putting the boys to bed so I was there in full on work clothes.. and BTW I'm old enough to have Iron Maiden albums from when they were the shit, not ironic... so those hipster wannabes irony was nothing compared to my unintentionally ironic appearance.

So anyhow, I'm totally zonked at this point. But I ran into an old friend from DC who drove up just to see the next act DMBQ, a psychedelic rock band from Japan. Nicole, my friend, taches 2nd grade in PG County and drove up from the DC area just to see the show - if she could stay, I rationalized I could at least for a spell. I'm glad I did - DMBQ was nuts live - jumping around, just having a great time- their ringer was this seemingly demure quiet woman who destroyed on the drumset..wearing kimono like garb. It was getting on 1:30 am so I left, but was glad I stayed for abour 30 minutes of the set.

Sadly, after doing a web search on Saturday to see reviews of their live show I found this on the net:

" Hello

It is with a lot of grief and weariness that I announce that tonite`s DMBQ and Friends show at Club Exit has been cancelled following a tragic car accident today.

DMBQ`s van rolled from I-95 in Delaware en route from Baltimore to Brooklyn this afternoon. All members of the band have been hospitalized, as well as Michelle Cable from Panache Magazine and booking, who has been managing their tour.

Mana "China" Nishiura did not survive the accident. China was DMBQ`s drummer, as well as the drummer in Shonen Knife. China will be missed.

Michelle Cable is conscious following surgery for a head injury. The other members of DMBQ are stable but sedated and are expected to recover.

That`s all the information I have.

None of the bands tonite nor I felt up to a rock show following the news.

We are tentatively planning to continue with tomorrow`s show @ Kingsland Tavern as a benefit to cover DMBQ`s travel and medical expenses. If the bands and I decide we can`t go through with the show, I`ll send out a cancellation.

Thank you for you support and your understanding.

Todd "

So I'm totally sad about this. I will post an appropriated followup with more info as ti develops.

More to come.

Just like 50 cent..

you can find me in da' club..

Thanks to Jay Parkinson for this photo of me guest bartending at the Spy club in Mt. Vernon.
I was a "celebrity bartender" for a fund raiser to raise money to help fund a wintercession trip to Nicarauga for a Hopkins student group. I had a fantastic time, but apologize to all who suffered through my take on mixed drinks!
